Reflections & Song Idea
Today we celebrate the Annunciation, when the Virgin Mary was approached by the angel Gabriel who announced
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”
And then Mary said yes. This is her fiat, her acceptance of God’s will for her.
There is so much here that you can put into a song. First of all, notice it is March 25, 9 months before Christmas on December 25. Also notice that Gabriel, like many angels in scripture says “Do not be afraid.” Angles are usually depicted as cute little children, but in reality they must be terrifying when you actually see one. This is also the first Joyful Mystery of the Holy Rosary.
And so much of Christianity hinges upon Mary saying, “May it be done to me according to your word.” So much of our salvation hinges upon you and me saying the same thing.
Be sure to really meditate on these readings. Also remember that one of the Saints of the day is St. Dismus, the good thief who was crucified next to Jesus. This happens at the other end of Jesus’ earthly life, but it is a story of someone else saying “yes” to God.
