Reflections & Song Idea

Today is Pentecost Sunday. It is the birthday of the Church. This is the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon all of the Christians gathered. All of the people gathered, from a multitude of cultures and places, could understand each other in one’s own language. In a way this is the reversal of the Old Testament story of the Tower of Babel, where the men trying to build a tower up to God could no longer understand one another. But here, at the Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit comes down upon men, they are all able to understand one another in one’s own language.

Let your song this week be about the Holy Spirit. There are a lot of symbols of the Holy Spirit you could use. At Pentecost, the Spirit is described as a mighty wind. You might also use the images of a consuming flame or a dove in your song. The Holy Spirit has many more names like Paraclete, Advocate, and Comforter. The Holy Spirit has even been referred to as the Wild Goose. Pray on all of these words, sing them to yourself, and listen to what sort of melody you might hear. Come up with a title or a theme, and get to work.

Pentecost is about a new beginning, a renewal. Let this be a renewal in your own life and in your songwriting.

The Song Form

The song form chosen for this song is an AABA form in the key of C set to a reggae rhythm. The last A section is a little different as it sets up either the song ending or a turnaround back to the top of the form.

This song form is just to get you started, but do anything you like to make this song your own. Feel free to use it as is or change the chords, rhythm, time signature, or key.
